Digital recreation and the deepfake: you can no longer believe everything you see

Authors

Abstract

This article analyses image rights and related issues in relation to digital recreations and deepfakes. This research is justified by the indiscriminate use of images manipulated through artificial intelligence that are so real that they are perceived as real by ordinary people, especially in a society accustomed to valuing the image as irrefutable and incontestable proof of the validity of acts carried out. The research is important because it seeks to contribute to the discussion about the use of Artificial Intelligence in the digital recreation of images that are not consistent with the truth.  The ‘seeing is believing’ of the apostle St Thomas is no longer the best tool for seeking the truth, because the image we see may now be false.
